CHRIS J. SHANKU
DATA & AI LEADER
I simplify complex technologies to empower decision-makers with clarity and confidence. As a passionate leader with 15+ years in Data & AI, I help organizations unlock their potential through storytelling, innovation, and empathy. Whether speaking on stage, building solutions, or mentoring future technologists, I live for community and impact.
About Me
I'm sitting in my cubicle when my boss calls me into her office. It's January 2010, I'm 25 years old, and I'm finishing up my first consulting project for Avanade in Tampa. My stomach tightens. When this project ends, I'll be unemployed. I was hired into a $30/hour position which, for a 25 year old, felt like winning the career lottery without even buying a ticket.
My boss, a pale-skinned woman in her forties with a jet-black perm that could cut glass, gestures for me to sit. The grip on my stomach tightens like a seatbelt before turbulence. She tells me there’s a new project opening up and she needs a Ruby on Rails developer.
"You've done good work so far, Chris - is this something you can do?"
I have never in my life heard of Ruby on Rails. I don’t know if it’s a programming language, a trendy gemstone, or a new commuter line in Atlanta. Panic sets in. I look her in the eye and say:
"Absolutely."
That night, I drive straight to Barnes & Noble like a man on a mission, buy a book on Ruby on Rails, grab takeout from Bahama Breeze, and lock myself in my hotel room. My book becomes my co-pilot, my laptop the cockpit. I repeat this for weeks - book open, laptop glowing, takeout containers piling up like trophies of survival. Eventually, I knock that project out of the park.
When it ends, Avanade HR calls to tell me I’m now a full-time, salaried employee. I hang up and exhale like I just landed a plane I didn’t know how to fly.
I often think about that moment. What if I’d said “no”? Or “I’ve never done that, but I could figure it out”? Neither might have been enough. I might’ve missed the door entirely, left wondering why opportunity never knocked.
Richard Branson once said, “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you're not sure you can do it, say YES - then learn how to do it later.”
That moment taught me that opportunity rarely comes clearly labeled. It knocks quietly - sometimes disguised as a programming language you’ve never heard of - and you have to be brave enough to answer. That mindset became a cornerstone of my career, leading to keynote stages, AI innovation, and mentoring the next generation of technologists.
Because my boss wasn’t asking if I could code Ruby on Rails in her office - she wanted to know if I could rise to the challenge.
You're damn right I can.

Career Journey
From BI architect to AI evangelist, my career has been defined by curiosity, courage, and a commitment to helping others succeed.
Avanade
Foundations in Consulting & Delivery (2009-2014)
My career began at Avanade, where I wore many hats: Business Intelligence Architect, Offshore Manager, Delivery Lead, and Business Analyst. Working at the intersection of Accenture’s consulting discipline and Microsoft’s technical innovation, I learned how to deliver scalable BI solutions while navigating complex stakeholder environments. I led offshore teams, resolved hundreds of defects across multiple business lines, and trained dozens of new consultants. It was here I first learned to say “yes” to opportunity, even when it came disguised as uncertainty.
Valorem Consulting
Building Teams & Driving Strategy (2014-2017)
At Valorem, I led the Data & Analytics practice, managing a team of 12 consultants and overseeing business strategy, P&L, and all technical presales. I grew the team by over 500% and created ConsulTrain, an internal readiness program designed to upskill consultants on customer engagement and consulting excellence. I was hand-picked by Microsoft to lead Power BI Dashboard in a Day events across Kansas City, hosting over 40 workshops that helped local organizations unlock the power of data storytelling. My role blended technical leadership with people development, and it deepened my passion for mentoring and community building.
Microsoft
Power BI Rockstar (2017-2022)
During my early years at Microsoft, I became the go-to Power BI technical resource across the entire Financial Services Industry (FSI) vertical. I hosted over 40 Dashboard in a Day workshops, mentored new hires, and built internal reporting solutions for Capital Markets executive leaders. My technical depth and consultative approach helped me exceed quota every fiscal year, including delivering over 500% VTT in FY20. I was invited to speak at the Power BI World Tour in Dallas (2018), where I presented “Power BI for Non-Developers,” and I published a blog called Dawg Data, focused on licensing breakdowns, configuration tips, and Power Platform integration. One of my proudest moments was building an Event Management System using Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and SharePoint Online to manage training registrations. That solution was featured on Microsoft’s FSI Fridays YouTube channel. This chapter of my career was defined by technical excellence, community engagement, and a deep commitment to helping others grow through data storytelling.
Microsoft
Data & AI Industry Leader (2022-2025)
As a Senior Specialist in Data & AI, I led transformative initiatives across the financial services sector, most notably spearheading the first Generative AI case study for US Financial Services, featured on Microsoft’s Customer Stories page. I delivered keynotes on Microsoft + OpenAI partnerships to top banking executives, facilitated Azure OpenAI production use cases, and created sales tools adopted by hundreds of specialists. My sales impact was consistent and measurable: I delivered 97% Azure Data Services revenue in both FY24 and FY25, led the Azure Arc Hero Motion for Banking, and drove a $1M Databricks win at a Midwest bank. I also built internal calculators and dashboards that streamlined pricing and reporting for over 100 specialists across FSI. I was named to Microsoft’s Executive Briefing Center (EBC) speaker list for AI and Microsoft Fabric, and was the only FSI representative selected for the Atlanta Innovation Hub Ambassadors program, where I gave tours and demos as a proxy Innovation Hub Architect. This phase of my journey was marked by strategic leadership, innovation at scale, and a relentless focus on simplifying complexity to drive real business impact, both technically and commercially.
Lifelong Learner
Growth Through Curiosity
What truly defines me is curiosity. I’ve read over 40 books this year alone, including Atomic Habits, Storyworthy, and Never Split the Difference. Each one shaped my approach to leadership, strategy, and storytelling. I hold multiple Microsoft certifications and continue to explore emerging technologies like Microsoft Fabric, Azure OpenAI, and Power Platform. Whether mentoring students, hosting workshops, or presenting to C-suite leaders, I bring clarity, compassion, and a deep commitment to growth. My mission is simple: listen deeply, learn continuously, and help others succeed - through technology, through story, and through connection.
Storytelling
Most of my storytelling events are for The Moth, a nonprofit whose mission is to promote the art and craft of storytelling and to honor and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.
The Moth hosts monthly StorySLAMs, which are open-mic competitions in which anyone can share a five-minute story on the night's theme.
